🎯 5 Common GCSE Maths Mistakes – And How to Avoid Them!
Whether you’re aiming for a Grade 4 or pushing for that elusive Grade 9, GCSE Maths can be a real challenge. But in my experience as a GCSE Maths tutor, I’ve found that students often make the same avoidable mistakes – and fixing them can make a big difference in both confidence and exam performance.
Here are 5 of the most common slip-ups I see (and how you can avoid them):
1. ❌ Not Showing Working
The mistake:
Writing only the final answer, especially in multi-mark questions.
Why it matters:
In GCSE Maths, method marks are crucial. Even if your final answer is wrong, showing the correct method can earn you valuable marks.
The fix:
Always show step-by-step working – even for questions you’re confident with. Think of your working as your insurance policy!
2. ❌ Ignoring Units and Labels
The mistake:
Forgetting to include units (like cm², £, or minutes), or mixing them up.
Why it matters:
Examiners take accuracy seriously, and a perfect answer without the correct units could cost you a mark.
The fix:
Underline units in the question and double-check that your answer includes them. It takes two seconds and can save you a mark!
3. ❌ Misreading the Question
The mistake:
Answering what you think the question is asking – not what it actually says.
Why it matters:
GCSE questions are getting more wordy and problem-based. Misreading a small detail can throw off your whole answer.
The fix:
Take your time. Highlight key information and re-read the question before diving in.
4. ❌ Skipping Topics You Don't Like
The mistake:
Avoiding topics like algebra, trigonometry, or probability because they feel "too hard."
Why it matters:
You never know which questions will appear in the exam. Skipping topics limits your options – and your potential marks.
The fix:
Identify weak areas early and work on them gradually. Even a little improvement in your least favourite topic can push you up a whole grade.
5. ❌ Not Practising Under Exam Conditions
The mistake:
Only revising with notes, or looking at solutions right away.
Why it matters:
GCSE Maths exams are all about speed and accuracy. Without practice under timed conditions, it’s hard to build exam stamina.
The fix:
Use past papers regularly. Set a timer, and resist checking answers until the end. Treat it like the real thing – the confidence boost is real!
✅ Final Thought
GCSE Maths success isn’t about being a genius – it’s about being consistent, avoiding silly mistakes, and building smart exam habits. With a bit of strategy and practice, every student can improve their grade.
